Bold, rich, and not for the faint of heart — this is our dark side. Our dark roast coffees are roasted longer to bring out deep, smoky flavor, low acidity, and a full, satisfying body. If you love a cup with backbone — one that stands up to milk, holds its own as espresso, and finishes smooth — this is your collection.
Every dark roast here is certified USDA Organic, 100% Arabica, and roasted small-batch to order in Oceanside, California. Choose whole bean or ground depending on how you brew, in 1 lb and 5 lb bags. Standouts include our Le Bean Dark French Roast and the traditional Il Chicco Italian Roast — and for a bold cup without the caffeine, the Decaf French Roast.
Dark roast beans are roasted longer and to a higher temperature, which deepens the color, lowers acidity, and brings out bold, smoky, full-bodied flavor. The result is a richer, less acidic cup than a medium or light roast.
Slightly less, actually. Longer roasting burns off a small amount of caffeine, so by volume dark roast has marginally less than a lighter roast — though the difference per cup is minor. Dark roast tastes stronger because it’s bolder, not because it’s more caffeinated.
Dark roasts shine in methods that showcase deep flavor: French press, drip, and espresso all work beautifully. Use about 2 tablespoons of grounds per 6 oz of water, and grind just before brewing for the fullest flavor.
